Nissequogue River State Park Nature Walk August 29

Join HECMR and our partners at the Suffolk County Department of Health Services Office of Minority Health for a Historic Community Nature Walk! The nature walk will take place at Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park on August 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

We’ll start with health and tick safety chats from Suffolk County Arthropod Borne Disease Lab and Stony Brook University. Then, New York State Parks will lead us on a history walk highlighting local wildlife and plants while reflecting on the old Kings Park Psychiatric Center (located near the state park).

There will be 2 all-terrain wheelchairs available for this walk, one self-propelled and one electrical assist that requires a companion.

About the Park

  • Trail length is approximately 1 mile with dirt and gravel leading to the Nissequogue River and Long Island Sound
  • Bathrooms available at visitor center
  • Canoeing and kayaking rentals

How to Prepare for Your Nature Walk!

  • Wear light-colored clothing, long pants and sleeves.
  • Consider using bug repellents and walk along the center of trails.
  • Conduct frequent clothing checks and carefully inspect your body for ticks.
  • Bring water, wear sunscreen (at least SPF 30) and consider wearing a brimmed hat and comfortable shoes (no flip flops).
